The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute is one of Europe’s largest centres for interdisciplinary neuroscience excellence. Located at the heart of King’s College London’s Denmark Hill Campus, it is home to a unique core of neuroscientists carrying out cutting edge research.  The Institute is driving research that will translate molecular discoveries made in the laboratory into therapies for patients affected by disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy and is an internationally recognised centre for brain research. 

The post holder will be expected to assist the Laboratory manager (LM) with a range of general laboratory operations to maintain a clean and safe environment for all and in addition will provide support for laboratory equipment.  

You will be responsible for general laboratory management and specialised technical duties within the department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience which will include autoclaving, glassware washing, ordering and monitoring of shared consumables and participation in operational rotas as required e.g. liquid nitrogen replenishment, gas cylinders and waste disposal.  In addition, the post-holder will manage, maintain and run the Wohl Fly Kitchen, providing media supplies to the Drosophila (fruit fly) research groups. This activity will constitute approx. 0.5 fte of the duties required of this role.  The post would suit a well-organised, proactively driven team player keen to collaborate with other team members and provide high quality technical assistance.

This is a full-time post.

Assist with laboratory management as specified by the LM. 

Provide technical guidance to members of staff, students and visitors. 

Supporting research staff including, but not limited to, treatment of laboratory waste and disposal, organisation and transport of all gas cylinders, and maintenance of liquid nitrogen levels in all Dewars.  The appointee will need to do a half-day formal training course in the handling of cryogenic liquids and gas safety. 

Assist LM with Health & Safety duties including:

Implement a progressive Health & Safety system that will be reviewed periodically to take into account changes in national legislation. 

Liaise with the Institute or KCL Health & Safety advisors and, where appropriate, KCL Safety Office on all matters relating to Health & Safety.

Become a First Aider for the department and act as a Fire Evacuation Marshal. 

Ensure the relevant departmental Code of Practice, Risk Assessments & Standard Operating Procedures are followed. 

Ensure staff adherence to Health & Safety regulations as set out by the Institute and KCL. 

Provide ongoing training in the use of laboratory equipment. 

Be involved in the planning and implementation of minor works, including: 

Identify problems and taking remedial action. 

Liaise with Site Services Department for minor issues relating to facilities. 

Liaise with Estates Department for minor issues relating to maintenance. 

Liaise with those working on refurbishment projects where applicable. 

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Technical Team.  They will be educated to at least degree level and have significant demonstrable experience in a research environment.
